Mahakali River:

The Mahakali River, also called Sharda and Kali River originates at Kalapani in the Himalayas in the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand.

The river flows along Nepal’s western border with India. It joins Ghaghra River, a tributary of the Ganges.

Mahakali Treaty:

It is an agreement between the Government of Nepal and the Government of India regarding the integrated development of the Mahakali River.

The treaty was signed in 1996.

The treaty recognizes the Mahakali River as a boundary river between the two countries.

Why in News?

Government is building a bridge over this river in Dharchula, Uttarakhand.

This will be the second motor bridge on the India-Nepal border in Uttarakhand. The other one, the Banbasa bridge, is situated in the Champawat district.
