Q.4) Which of the following products are formed when anaerobic respiration takes places in the muscle cells ?
1. Carbon dioxide
2. Oxygen
3. Water
4. Energy
5. Lactic Acid

a) 1, 2 and 3 only
b) 1, 4 and 5 only
c) 4 and 5 only
d) 2, 3 and 4 only

Ans. C

Explanation:
Our muscle cells can also respire anaerobically, but only for a short time, when there is a temporary deficiency of oxygen. During heavy exercise, fast running (Fig. 10.1), cycling, walking for many hours or heavy weight lifting, the demand for energy is high. But the supply of oxygen to produce the energy is limited. Then anaerobic respiration takes places in the muscle cells to fulfil the demand of energy:
Glucose(in muscle & in the absence of oxygen ) —>lactic acid + energy
The partial breakdown of glucose produces lactic acid. The accumulation of lactic acid in muscles causes muscle cramps. We get relief from cramps after a hot water bath or a massage. Hot water bath or massage improves circulation of blood. As a result, the supply of oxygen to the muscle cells increases. The increase in the supply of oxygen results in the complete breakdown of lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water.

Q.5) Consider the following statement regarding Chain of markets.

1. The people in between the producer and the final consumer are the traders.
2. The wholesale trader first buys goods in large quantities.
3. The trader who finally sells this to the consumer, is the retailer.

Which of the following are not true?

a. 1 and 2
b. 2 and 3
c. None of these
d. All of these

Ans. C

Explanation:
The people in between the producer and the final consumer are the traders. The wholesale trader first buys goods in large quantities. For example, the vegetable wholesale trader will not buy a few kilos of vegetables, but will buy in large lots of 25 to 100 kilos. These will then be sold to other traders. In these markets, buying and selling takes place between traders. It is through these links of traders that goods reach faraway places. The trader who finally sells this to the consumer, is the retailer. This could be a trader in a weekly market, a hawker in the neighbourhood or a shop in a shopping complex.
Since the question asks to choose statements that are not true, hence option c) is correct.
