It is a natural, deep-water port on the East coast of India in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha. It is situated at confluence of the Mahanadi river and the Bay of Bengal.

Other Major ports are Kandla, Mumbai JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, and Tuticorin.

Earlier this year, Union Cabinet has given ‘in-Principal’ approval for setting up of 13th Major Port at Vadhavan.
