Crime against Women
- According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), every day 93 women are being raped in the country.
- According to NCRB data, there is a gradual increase in the number of rapes reported in India – from 24,923 in 2012 to 33,707 in 2013.
- Crime against women across the country increased by around 10 per cent last year as compared to previous year with total 3,37,922 cases registered in 2014 against 3,09,546 cases in 2013, according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s latest report
- Indian Government statistics also show that an estimated 7000 brides are killed and 18000 are maimed every year in India over dowry disputes alone.
Domestic Violence
- Among all registered cases of serious crimes against women, the largest share was under “cruelty by husband and relatives”. 36 per cent of all cases were registered under this category says a new report for the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, titled ‘Women and Men in India – 2015’
Income Inequality
- A survey by recruitment firm Monster India says that the median wage earned by women is 27% lower than what men make. Gender continues to play a significant role in determining the wages in the Indian labour market, notes the survey. It says this gap in earnings could be due to a preference for male employees, promotion of male employees to supervisory positions, career breaks for women due to child birth and other socio-cultural factors.
MMR
- Under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the MDG 5 target is to reduce maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by three quarters between 1990 and 2015. This translates to reducing the MMR from 560 in 1990 to 140 in 2015. India is likely to reach an MMR of 140 if the current compound rate of annual decline continues.
